The Great Storm of 1975
This great storm was also known to the people as the Super Bowl Blizzard, Minnesota Storm of the Century or the Tornado Outbreak of 1975. This storm was deserving of all these names because of its intensity and mass destruction that was caused by it. Starting on January 9th of 1975, there was a stunning 45 tornadoes to touch the ground from the Southeast and as far as the Central United States. The tornadoes alone killed a total of 12 people. These tornadoes were fallowed by over two feet of accumulated snow that covered the ground in a great blizzard. The blizzard killed 58 people; almost five times the amount of fatalities caused by the tornadoes of this great storm. Not only humans were effected by this tragic storm, but over 100,000 farm animals were lost to this great storm.
This Great Storm has showed us, the people of the United States, what nature is capable of. This storm had record breaking low pressures and severely cold temperatures. Farmers as a whole lost over 100,000 animals and had to compensate for their loss. They had to make better animal housing systems and a better ways to shelter them and keep them from the harsh weather. This storm inspired many farmers to take better care of their animals and make sure they are healthy... and warm.
This storm is extremely significant addition to our museum because we have never seen a storm like this one in any other point of American history. This storm is the only one that mixed together massive amounts of snow and ridiculous numbers of tornadoes. This storm takes all storms to a whole new level and definitely deserves the name The Great Storm and deserves the spot in our museum.
